A group of pupils stoned to death a man who was allegedly part of a trio who held them up at gunpoint.

The pupils at Charles Sabelo High School in Umbumbulu said the men approached them on the school playground and demanded cash and cellphones yesterday.

The incident happened at 7.30am.

The men entered the school premises while the gate was still open.

It is alleged that they held a number of pupils at gunpoint, demanding that they hand over cellphones and cash.

But instead the pupils stoned the men, who fled in different directions. The pupils caught up with one of them, a 25-year-old man, and stoned him to death.

Police spokesperson Jay Naicker said when the police arrived at the scene they found a knife in the dead man's possession.

He said a case of murder was being investigated.

"We are looking for the two men who fled the scene, one of whom was allegedly armed."

Senzo Mchunu, the MEC for education, said it was unfortunate that one of the robbers was killed, but also expressed concern that schools had become soft targets for criminals.

"I urge parents and communities to work with the police to make our schools safe," said Mchunu.
