A TYCOON believed to be a friend of suspected crime mastermind William "Mashobane" Mbatha is behind bars after he was cornered by police on Friday.

Vusi Hlatswayo, 34, was arrested shortly after a Chinese businessman was robbed of R1million in cash.

Armed with a false police identity cards, two guns and a car fitted with police lights, Hlatswayo and a friend allegedly cornered the man near Eastgate Mall on Friday.

"They snatched the cash and fled," said crime intelligence spokesperson Senior Superintendent Tummi Shai.

"Vigilant people who had already phoned our 10111 number gave chase, together with police, forcing the men to drop the loot. His accomplice managed to escape."

Sporting a bandage around his right arm, Hlatswayo of Rabie Ridge, Midrand, made a brief appearance in the Germiston magistrate's court yesterday on charges of impersonating a police officer.

Shai said they were still investigating more charges. These could include robbery and illegal possession of firearms.

She said it was not yet clear if the robbery victim was going to or returning from the bank.

Hlatswayo, who operates five Toyota Venture taxis around Thembisa, is also said to own a R669900 Jeep Cherokee SRT8, two double-cab vans, a VW Golf GTI, among others.
