The baby girl was found in the park of a plush Durban suburb.
Neil du Rand, 19, said he was walking in the park on Monday afternoon when he discovered the baby.
"I looked in the direction from which the sound was coming. When I looked down I saw the baby lying on the ground, covered in mud.
"She had nothing on. She was naked and ants had begun eating at her umbilical cord.
"She could not have been more than two hours old," he said.
The shocked Du Rand said he immediately called his mother to help him care for the infant.
"We called for the paramedics who came and assisted us in giving her a warm bath.
Netcare 911 spokesperson Jeff Wicks said the baby was treated for mild hypothermia by emergency paramedics who also clamped the umbilical cord.
Netcare Umhlanga Hospital spokesperson Sheena Dhunlal said the baby was taken to a place of safety after being released in a stable condition from the hospital yesterday.
SAPS spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said police had opened a case of abandonment.
Zwane said no arrests had been made and that police were appealing to anyone who might have information regarding the whereabouts of the child's mother.
