A man was arrested for alleged possession of about 150000 mandrax tablets and bribing police officers in Redhouse, Port Elizabeth, the Hawks said yesterday.

Hawks spokesperson Colonel Musa Zondi said: "He was caught with a bag of tablets in his hands, when the Hawks swooped in. Close to 150000 mandrax tablets were found hidden in steel trunks in the storeroom."

Zondi said during his arrest on Tuesday night, the 54-year-old man allegedly tried to bribe the police with R1million each.

"He asked them to take him to his Bluewater Bay home where the money was stashed. On arrival he handed an amount of about R800000 in cash to them," Zondi said.

The man was due to appear in the Port Elizabeth magistrate's court tomorrow on charges of dealing in drugs, bribery and the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.

Zondi said the police also confiscated three vehicles - a BMW M6, ML350 Mercedes-Benz and VW Passat - and a 9mm pistol with 14 rounds of ammunition. The serial number on the firearm had been filed off. - Sapa
