Cops turn to culture to fight crime

POLICE have turned to Zulu culture and dance to reverse the scourge of crime in Umzumbe on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast.

Umzumbe, which is a tourist attraction , has been under the spell of criminals , who rob tourists of their valuables and kill them.

Now police, the municipality and department of arts and culture have joined forces to enlighten the community about the importance of fighting crime to boost the local economy.

The initiative is aimed at educating the youth and reinforcing their cultural heritage.

Local schools have been roped in to ensure there was safety in schools.

Cops have also encouraged youth to stay away from drugs, liquor, child abuse and promiscuous behaviour.

Mayor Sydney Gumede yesterday said they turned to Zulu culture to fight all the social ills that affect the society in the municipality.

Police spokesperson Vincent Pandarum said the resounding success of the initiative will certainly impact positively on the lives of the youth.
