THE next Bafana Bafana coach will be announced before the start of the 2010 Fifa World Cup in June - and it will be a South African.
Safa vice-president Mandla Mazibuko confirmed that association, president Kirsten Nematandani would name Carlos Alberto Parreira's successor before a ball was kicked at the World Cup. The tournament starts on June 11.
"That is how serious we are. And the new coach will have to qualify for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2014 World Cup in Brazil," said Mazibuko.
He refused to say who the new could would be, but confirmed that they will employ a South African.
So the toss could be between current Bafana Bafana assistant coach Pitso "Jingles" Mosimane and celebrated SuperSport United mentor Gavin Hunt.
Mosimane has said he was ready to lead Bafana after the World Cup, having gained invaluable knowledge under Parreira and Joel Santana. He was also an interim coach with Jairo Leal.
Hunt is also seen as a worthy successor to Parreira.
The United mentor was appointed as a technical adviser to Bafana under Santana, with former Bafana coaches Clive Barker and Jomo Sono.
South Africans would welcome a local coach for Bafana, after questioning Safa's wisdom in employing foreigners for the job. They argued that South Africa has coaches who can lead the national team to great heights. They based their argument on Barker's 1996 African Cup of Nations success.
Mazibuko said it was about time the team had its own identity.
He reiterated that getting a local coach does not mean the expertise of foreign coaches would not be needed.
"(But) we do have knowledgeable coaches like Harold Legodi, Gavin Hunt and Ted Dumitru who can also perform that duty."
