A Monday afternoon meeting between KwaZulu-Natal MEC for transport Willies Mchunu and the provincial taxi industry has paid of. The was an agreement to call off the strike.
Mchunu met operators and it was agreed that the strike be suspended "with immediate effect". The taxi operators were complaining about "continued harassment" by the city's metro police.
The strike was called off as a result of meetings that Mchunu held on Saturday and Monday with members of the SA National Taxi Council, Concerned Taxi Operators Committee, metro police and eThekwini municipal management.
The meetings were held after thousands of commuters, including school- children, were left stranded because of the strike.
"We reached an agreement on the process of taking forward the issues that are a sore point, such as law enforcement, impounding of vehicles and the use of tow trucks by the city law enforcement officials.
"Before this agreement, it was resolved that a technical administrative committee be established with immediate effect. It comprises officials from the department of transport, metro police and eThekwini management.
"The team will formulate a comprehensive plan that will look into problems affecting the taxi industry in the eThekwini Metro, including the perceived targeting of taxis by metro police," Mchunu said.
"This approach will ensure that together with the industry we address every case so that no matter is left unresolved," he said.
This meeting will also have to formulate a comprehensive long-term plan that will address the above-stated issues.
KZN Taxi Council member Mzameni Mthiyane said: "We are satisfied with the role the MEC has played and the resolutions taken during deliberations."
