STRIKING workers belonging to South African Municipal Workers Union are to call on other Cosatu affiliated unions to support them.

STRIKING workers belonging to South African Municipal Workers Union are to call on other Cosatu affiliated unions to support them.

This comes after South African Local Government Association (Salga) refused to concede to the union's demand of a two-year back pay after a jobs evaluation and wage curve had been implemented.

Samwu's Tahir Sema said yesterday: "If Salga does not agree to our demand in a day or two, we will intensify the strike by calling on Cosatu to support us."

He said the union and Salga would continue to hold talks at the bargaining council.

Meanwhile the DA's Jack Bloom has laid a charge of intimidation against the union at the Jeppe police station. He said the union had intimidated nurses at Bezuidenhout Valley clinic.

Police officers who accompanied Bloom to the clinic found a notice on the gate. It read: "Attention All. This facility will be closed for the duration of the municipality workers strike.

For more info call: 011-331-1001, Samwu office."

When Sowetan called the number, an unidentified person answered: "Go to (Amos) Masondo's office at the Civic Centre and toyi-toyi.

"Tell him to fix his mess so that clinics can start operating."
