THE Bojanala Platinum District Municipality Mayoral Cup, aimed at creating awareness of the 2010 World Cup, is nearing its end with the semifinals taking place on Saturday.

THE Bojanala Platinum District Municipality Mayoral Cup, aimed at creating awareness of the 2010 World Cup, is nearing its end with the semifinals taking place on Saturday.

The teams that qualified for the last-32 round of this tournament were required to adopt the names of the countries who will feature in the World Cup in June.

Teams in the semifinals are Paraguay (Madibeng Junior Chiefs), Brazil (Phatsima All Stars), Algeria (Rustenburg Lagoon) and Germany (Skom Boys).

Bafana Bafana were adopted by Impala Arsenal, who were beaten 2-0 by Mexico (Marikana Exile United).

A total of 212 men's and 16 women's teams registered. Tournament director Innocent Sirovha said the semifinal matches will be played at Dirtig sport grounds in the Moretele local municipality on Saturday. The final is scheduled for Wonderkop Stadium on May 2 where soccer greats from Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs will also conduct coaching clinics.

Bojanala Platinum District municipality mayor Raymond Motsepe said: "The response so far to the tournament has been incredible."
