Hurricane blows boxing rivals away

JOHNNY "The Hurricane" Muller is the ideal candidate for Boxing South Africa's 2009 prospect of the year award.

JOHNNY "The Hurricane" Muller is the ideal candidate for Boxing South Africa's 2009 prospect of the year award.

A novice of only five wins, with four stoppages and a draw, Muller has raised eyebrows since he made his professional debut in April last year.

The 19-year-old, who is trained by former South African lightweight champion Peet Bothma, left the boxing fraternity gaping in disbelief at Wembley Arena when he poleaxed Sean Santana in one round in September. Santana had caused a stir by pummelling Sebastiaan Rothmann into submission in five rounds.

Rothmann, the former SA, WBU and IBO cruiserweight champion, retired after that terrible beating.

Muller is a rough-and-tumble fighter with a trip-hammer right hand. He showed a big heart when he defeated Mongezi Ndzamela, a fully fledged heavyweight fighter, in November.

He also stood his ground against Wiseman Dlomo, who looked like a hippopotamus at 102,58kg, reducing Muller to an ant at 89kg. Their six-rounder last month was declared a draw.

Muller takes no prisoners and with new trainer Harold Volbrecht on his side, the future looks bright for the fighter who has been nominated alongside Flo Simba and Luzuko Siyo.

The ceremony takes place at St Georges Hotel near Pretoria on Friday and the proceedings start at 5pm and end at 7pm.
