For a while now it has been clear that the troubles in the North West team ran deep, and coach Komphela has finally come out to confirm this.
"In my 22 years of football - both as a player and coach - I have never seen anything like this. This team is rotten to the core and it's been shocking," Komphela told Sowetan yesterday.
To salvage the situation, Komphela says he has submitted a report, and among the recommendations is that certain players whose contracts end in June should be let to go. He is also embarking on a country-wide scouting mission that kicks off in Mafikeng tomorrow.
"I have encountered resistance from some of these individuals at every turn. There are players who have not even been to training since our relocation to Rustenburg," he said.
To recap, Dinaledi recently fired Thabiso Monareng who they alleged had been missing for two months, and disciplinary action was taken against Godfrey Sapula, Oscar Ntwagae, Lefa Mogaila and Daniel Tshabalala who, according to Stars, had also bunked training.
There were rumours of a mini revolt brought about by the players' resentment of Komphela, who they claim did not consider them part of his plans.
"We have to have foresight and I cannot build a vital, competitive team from ashes. As unpalatable as it might be, we have to bring the average age in the team down. Also, the older a player is, the harder it is to recover from injury," Komphela said.
The coach feels he urgently needs players for several positions, with a quality left-footed centre-back, a holding midfielder, a right-back and a natural goalscorer among those needed.
During Komphela's scouting mission, he will visit Mafikeng on April 21 and 22, Klerksdorp on April 23 and 24, Kroonstad on April 27 and 27 and Botshabelo on April 28 and 29.
He will be in Durban on May 3 and 4, Newcastle on May 5 and 6, Secunda on May 7 and 8, before rounding off his mission in Nelspruit, Thohoyandou and Polokwane.
The final selections from all provinces will be conducted in Rustenburg from May 17 to 21.
