SOWETO Tennis Open tournament director Gavin Crookes has described the second instalment of the event as a roaring success.
He was speaking to Sowetan two days after the final of the eight-day international competition at the Arthur Ashe Tennis Centre in Jabavu, Soweto, on Saturday.
Crookes said this year's tournament has attracted more participants than the inaugural event that took place at the same venue last year.
"The overall standard of the game was very high and the support was fantastic throughout the tournament," Crookes said.
"The players enjoyed themselves in the field of play and were also grateful for the support they got from the community.
"It was very encouraging," said Crookes.
He said participants from abroad were impressed by the world-class venue in Soweto and promised to come back in numbers for next year's event.
Crookes and his team were full of praise for the City of Johannesburg for proving the state-of-the-art facility for the tournament.
"It was an honour to be involved in a tournament of this nature, where I had the full backing of my colleagues," Crookes said.
"I also want to thank the ball kids, lines umpires and all officials for their contribution."
Dustin Brown of Jamaica beat South African hopeful Izak van der Merwe 7-6(7-2)6-3 in the men's singles final and won R105000.
In the women's singles final, Nina Bratchikova of Russia defeated second seed Tamarine Tanasugarn of Thailand 7-5 7-6(7-4).
