BOSTON, Massachusetts - Robert Kiprono Cheruiyot of Kenya shattered the course record to win the men's title at the 114th Boston Marathon yesterday, while Ethiopia's Teyba Erkesso took the women's title.

Cheruiyot won in 2:05:52 and shattered the old mark of 2:07:14 set by Robert Kipkoech Cheruiyout in 2006.

Ethiopia's Tekeste Kebede was second in 2:07:23 with compatriot Deriba Merga, the 2009 Boston Marathon winner, settling for third in 2:08:39.

"I knew nothing about the 2:05 but when I saw the time with 5km to go when I was with Merga, I tried to push and push," Cheruiyot said. - Sapa-AFP
