Three student constables from Mhala police station went to the home of Comfort Kubayi, 28, to arrest him on charges related to a burglary last Wednesday when a policeman allegedly shot him dead with an R5 rifle.
Policeman injured
The incident happened in front of Kubayi's brother Olly and his wife at Thulamahashe Section C, where Kubayi allegedly hid under the bed to evade the police before they hauled him out.
His brother said yesterday that one of the three policemen grabbed Kubayi by the hands and pants from the back but that the other cop in front fired a shot from a rifle that "hit both the policeman and my brother".
Sowetan also discovered that the policeman was injured in the waist and was rushed to hospital in Nelspruit, where he is receiving medical treatment for a bullet wound.
'Aimed to kill'
Mhala police spokesperson Constable Robert Makhubela confirmed this yesterday despite his earlier report that no policeman had been injured.
"He was not seriously injured and we are still not sure if the bullet indeed hit him but he did go to hospital.
"I can't comment further as the matter is in the hands of the ICD," said Makhubela.
Olly accused the police of having arrived with the aim of killing his brother, leaving the family traumatised and in need of counselling.
"I do not doubt they had come to kill because even when the other policeman was holding my brother's hands the other one fired a shot," he said.
He said the funeral of his brother was scheduled to take place on Saturday in Thulamahashe.
