IN a few weeks the ANC in Gauteng will elect a new executive committee. Gauteng, being the hub of the South African economy, should elect the right people to lead.
Since 1994 the ANC has consistently advocated one centre of power. This is to eliminate confusion among members as to who holds the real power between the premier and the provincial chairperson.
It was also done to assist in speeding up service delivery at local level. The principle is that the provincial chairperson should automatically become premier and visa-versa. As an ANC member I totally agree with this principle.
At the coming conference there are two candidates, premier Nomvula Mokonyane and Deputy Minister of Arts and Culture Paul Mashatile.
Our people are growing restless about a lack of services by our government. Part of the problem is the red tape that our leaders have to adhere to before making decisions that affect millions of people. The premier has to consult the chairperson before taking and implementing these decisions.
It is crucial that we adhere to this principle for the sake, not only of ANC members, but for all South Africans, particularly those in Gauteng. Our responsibility as ANC members is to ensure that implementation of services happens quickly.
That is why we have to go to this conference with one intention - to eliminate the current two centres of power.
Delegates, your branches have placed their faith in you by electing you to represent them. One centre of power saves time, cuts through red tape, makes sense and, most of all, is the right thing to do.
Vote for Mokonyane for consistency in Gauteng and South Africa.
