CMA boosts poor runners

THE Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) has once more committed itself to making it possible for 1000 runners from disadvantaged communities to participate in this year's race.

THE Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) has once more committed itself to making it possible for 1000 runners from disadvantaged communities to participate in this year's race.

Through its Disadvantaged Runners Programme the association will provide the runners with transport and accommodation.

They will also get meals in the build-up to the marathon, which has been brought forward to avoid clashing with the 2010 Fifa World Cup.

This year's marathon, which will see more than 20000 runners from as far afield as Zimbabwe, Namibia, Germany and Russia participating, will be run on May 30.

"Many runners are experiencing particularly tough times and are unable to afford paying for accommodation and transport to Durban or Pietermaritzburg," said CMA marketing coordinator Thami Vilakazi.

"The CMA appreciates their courage and commitment and feels that the least it can do is to ensure that these runners have a roof over their heads and are well-rested," added Vilakazi.

This year's race will include top runners such as Josia Thugwane, Fusi Nhlapo, Walter Nkosi, Andrew Kelehe, Farwa Mentoor and Sarah Mahlangu. among others.
