Nine Nigerian men briefly appeared in theErmelo magistrate's court on Friday to face charges under the Sexual Offences Act and of kidnapping.
The men allegedly lured at least 12 women between the ages of 18 and 30 from all over South Africa by promising them lucrative jobs to Ermelo where they forced them to work as sex slaves.
The men were not asked to plead and were remanded in custody pending their next court appearance on April 30 for a formal bail application.
Mpumalanga police spokesperson Captain Leonard Hlathi said statements from some of the victims include that they were kidnapped and turned into sex slaves.
"The women told us that they were given R30 per day and that they were fed just enough to keep them alive while they were forced to take drugs from time to time so that they could stay addicted."
It is also alleged that the suspects might have committed the same offences in other provinces.
