Two men beat up a security guard and stabbed another at a clinic near Mthatha yesterday when they couldn't get condoms, the Eastern Cape health department said.

Spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo said the pair arrived at the Phakamile clinic at 1am and demanded condoms.

They attacked the two guards when they were told there were no condoms since the clinic was closed.

"We have facilities that are open 24 hours and those that open during the day. People are encouraged to collect condoms when the clinic is opened," Kupelo said.

A case would be opened with the police. - Sapa
