Warning for PSL teams

FOR several Absa Premiership clubs, the round of 32 matches of the Nedbank Cup appear to present no particular obstacle.

FOR several Absa Premiership clubs, the round of 32 matches of the Nedbank Cup appear to present no particular obstacle.

However, if Mamelodi Sundowns, Ajax Cape Town, Bidvest Wits and Mpumalanga Black Aces know what is good for them, they will not allow any drop in standards, lest they make a premature exit from this competition.

After all, with Platinum Stars falling victim to unknown Als Puk Tawana, a warning has been sent out.

Tonight, Roger de Sa's Wits kickoff their campaign against National First Division (NFD) outfit Nathi Lions at Durban's Chatsworth Stadium.

De Sa's team has been spectacular in its mediocrity of late - ending their league campaign outside the top eight and getting kicked out of the Telkom Knockout by Jomo Cosmos.

It certainly will be refreshing if the likes of Sifiso Myeni, captain Sibusiso Mahlangu and Calvin Kadi were to show some of that class that we know them of tonight.

Tomorrow at 3pm at Boland Stadium in the Western Cape, Santos entertain relegated Jomo Cosmos.

In the Free State, Tower United and Free State Stars clash at Botshabelo Stadium. The match kicks off at 8pm.

On Sunday, Sundowns and Ajax Cape Town are in action and are probably anticipating a thoroughfare to the next round. The Brazilians travel to Ulundi Stadium in KwaZulu-Natal where they clash with Island FC, while the Urban Warriors have been pitted against another amateur side Wings United at Newlands Stadium.

That the PSL teams have an edge over their opponents is a given, but cup competitions are not known as "fairy tale affairs" for nothing.

It was in the exact same "Ke Yona" last season, when the NFD's University of Pretoria confounded reason by blowing away the likes of Bloemfontein Celtic, Kaizer Chiefs, and Ajax en route to a runners-up finish.
