A Mpumalanga school teacher was found hanging from the roof of his rented room yesterday morning.

The department of education in the province has already sent condolences to the family and colleagues of Joseph Baloyi, 40, from Block B near Malelane.

Baloyi was a life sciences teacher at Mgubho Combined School in Tonga, near Malelane.

Education spokesperson Jasper Zwane said it was painful to lose a teacher of Baloyi's calibre.

"I would like to urge educators not to bottle up their problems because it can lead to suicide.

"Teachers should try to consult counsellors if they have problems," said Zwane

Tonga police spokesperson Sergeant Mzwandile Nyambi said Baloyi's death became known after his friend failed to reach him on his cellular phone. He then phoned Baloyi's neighbour. The neighbour went to investigate and found him hanging from the roof of his room.

"Our investigations have suggested that he used a rope to commit suicide. However, we are still investigating in order to make sure that it was indeed a suicide," he said.

Nyambi said another thing that was disturbing their investigation was the fact that Baloyi did not leave a suicide note.

He said an inquest docket had been opened.

The teacher's colleagues were reluctant to talk to the media.
