Suspect shot by cops in 'attack'

MPUMALANGA police shot and killed a 28-year-old man who allegedly attacked a police officer yesterday.

Mhala police spokesperson Constable Robert Makhubela confirmed that Comfort Kubayi of in Thulamahashe, Bushbuckridge, was shot once in the stomach.

"Police had been searching for Kubayi and other suspects since Tuesday. Police got a tip-off that led them to Kubayi's home.

"When he realised that the cops had his house surrounded, he armed himself with a knife and a panga.

"When police entered his room, he attacked them. He overpowered two officers and ran towards the door where another officer was standing. As the officer tried to restrain him, he attacked him. The cornered cop pulled out his service firearm and shot him," he said.

Makhubela said Kubayi was rushed to the local clinic where he was declared dead on arrival.

He said none of the police offers was injured.

Makhubela said the case had been handed over to the Independent Complaints Directorate for investigation while Kubayi's family refused to comment, saying they were undergoing counselling.
