MELBOURNE - Former world junior cycling champion Mark French is suing an Australian newspaper for labelling him a disgraced drug cheat.

The 25-year-old Olympian was banned for two years in 2004 for doping offences but was cleared on appeal the following year.

French is now suing the HeraldandWeekly Times in the Victorian State Supreme Court over articles published in August 2004, which he said damaged his reputation.

The HeraldandWeekly Times told the court yesterday it will defend the charges because at the time the reports were published French was under suspension for doping offences. - Sapa-AP
