THE leadership of the Congress of the People's Youth Movement has announced it will reveal its preferred candidate for the top job in the organisation today.
The Cope Youth Movement this week summoned party president Mosioua Lekota and his deputy Mbhazima Shilowa to explain why they were the right people to lead the party.
Cope YM national working committee grilled Shilowa yesterday and is due to put Lekota on the hot seat today.
At the end of the meeting with Lekota at Cope headquarters in Braamfontein, Johannesburg, the youth movement will announce its preferred candidate ahead of Cope's elective conference scheduled for May 27 to 30.
Cope YM secretary Malusi Booi told Sowetan that the sessions offered each leader the last opportunity to canvass support from the youth movement. "We want them to present their plans for this organisation in future noting the fact that the organisation failed to capitalise on the public support it received from all South Africans when it was formed in 2008.''
The youth movement is expected to announce Shilowa as its presidential candidate while Mvume Dandala was expected to be charged with building Cope structures after the conference.
A faction backing Lekota has been accused of threatening to break away from the organisation if Shilowa is elected party president.
Booi said the youth movement was worried about the allegations of a plot to split the organisation.
Three branches in Cape Town have accused Western Cape Cope leaders, who back Shilowa, of devising unfair ways to bring their supporters to vote at the elective conference.
