Very little thought goes into what women put on their skin. Up to 60percent of whatever you put on your skin is absorbed directly into your bloodstream.

A study from the Environmental Working Group says teens use more personal care products than an average adult woman. Chemicals in cosmetics used by teens can have a negative effect on their skin.

Always read the ingredients of cosmetics.

Widely used additives, Parabens and Phalates, are raising suspicions among scientists. Parabens are preservatives used in make-up to prevent microbial growth, ostensibly to protect consumers. They might very well be estrogen-imitating endocrine disruptors implicated in the growth of cancer cells.

Phalates in nail polish and fragrances have been found to have an effect on the reproductive systems of lab animals and to be absorbed by the human body.

Mercury is a potent nervous-system toxin. It accumulates in the body. It is used as a preservative in eye cosmetics.

Coal-tar is found in many colours used in make-up and hair dye. They have been shown to cause cancer .

Formaldehyde , found in eyeshadow, mascara and nail polish is also said to cause cancer.
