THE move to circumcise more than 2million men in KwaZulu-Natal has been welcomed by the Treatment Action Campaign.
The organisation was responding to an announcement made by King Goodwill Zwelithini and KwaZulu-Natal MEC for health Sibongiseni Dhlomo at the launch of the male circumcision campaign held at the umkhosi wokweshwama (first fruit) ceremony.
He first called for its revival last year. The male circumcision will form part of the HIV Counselling and Testing campaign.
According to the South African Medical Research Council male circumcision refers to the removal of the foreskin of the male penis.
The TAC's Marcus Low said while they welcomed the move, it was vital to remember that male circumcision is only partially effective in HIV-positive female transmission to HIV-negative circumcised males.
"It is important that the men use additional protection such as condoms and remember that they are still at risk even if they are circumcised."
