super 14 a loose-mall

IT'S getting down to the business end of the Super 14 season with all five South African teams having a piece of the action this coming weekend.

With just five rounds left before the semifinals, there is going to be some jockeying for a place in the final four and at this stage it must be even money that the Bulls from Pretoria and Crusaders from Christchurch will fill two of the positions.

The only thing standing in the way of the Crusaders making the playoffs, is the fact that they haven't played their overseas leg of the competition yet.

The Force in Perth, Stormers in Cape Town and Bulls in Pretoria is the challenge they face with all three games shaping up as classics.

At the moment the Waratahs are sitting in third position on 29 points, with the Stormers one point behind.

The Stormers will be looking to carry on their impressive form against the Chiefs in Hamilton, New Zealand, on Saturday.

At home the local derby at Ellis Park on Saturday afternoon between the Lions and Sharks is pretty academic.

The Sharks, led by John Smit, know that they only have a mathematical chance of making the final four, while the Lions will be playing for nothing but pride.

Riddled with injuries, a suspension and captain Juan Smith back home in Bloemfontein following the death of his father, the Cheetahs will be wishing they were anywhere but Christchurch on Saturday morning when they take on the Crusaders.

The Bulls, on the other hand, roll on with menacing intent and will be hoping to catch the Reds on the back foot when they clash in Brisbane on Saturday afternoon.
