ROME - Serena Williams will make her comeback from injury at the Rome International next month, organisers said yesterday.

The world No 1 has been given a wild card since she was not on the original entry list for the tournament that runs from May 2 to 8.

It means that only US Open champion Kim Clijsters will be missing from the world's top 10 players. Williams has not played since January due to a knee injury.

Ruben Bemelmans of Belgium beat Lukas Lacko of Slovakia 2-6 7-6(2) 6-3 in the men's singles in the second day of the Soweto Open at Arthur Ashe tennis centre in Jabavu yesterday.

Chris Eaton of the UK beat Adrian Menendez-Maceiras of Spain 6-7(5) 7-6(5) 6-2, while Nicolas Mahut of France beat Yen-Hsun Lu of Taiwan 3-6 7-6(5) 6-4 and Harel Levy of Israel overcame South Africa's Rik de Voest.

The Soweto Tennis Open will conduct coaching clinics at the centre today between 2pm and 4pm. - AFP with additional reporting by Meshack Khotha
