"Road maintenance is wide open to abuse because the skills and capacity to monitor what is going on in the roads is not there," Deputy Minister of Transport Jeremy Cronin said yesterday.
Cronin's statement comes amid the controversy over how a company linked to ANCYL leader Julius Malema was awarded multi-million tenders by municipalities in Limpopo to build roads and bridges.
The company, SGL Consulting, is accused of shoddy work. A bridge it had built was washed away. Yesterday Transport Minister Sbu Ndebele said he had asked the Limpopo government to investigate the matter.
Premier Cassel Mathale's spokesperson Phuthi Mosomane yesterday denied any bridge in Limpopo had been washed away.
He referred Sowetan to Transport MEC Pinky Kekana, but her spokesperson Callies Matlala was also not aware of any probe.
Ndebele said transport would be ready well before the World Cup kick-off for the 31 international teams.
