Suspected robber beaten to death

A 30-YEAR-OLD Atteridgeville man was beaten to death after he and two accomplices allegedly shot and killed a 24-year-old man during an armed robbery in Kwaggasrand, Pretoria West, at the weekend.

According to police spokesperson Inspector Daniel Mavimbela, Willie Pienaar had just finished buying several items at the local café and was about to get into his car when he was accosted by the trio.

"They grabbed the deceased from behind and a struggle ensued. One of the suspects drew a firearm and shot the deceased in the upper body. Community members who witnessed the attack caught up with the fleeing suspects and assaulted them," he said.

Mavimbela said Pienaar was certified dead on arrival at hospital.

He said one of the suspects, David Masha, died in hospital moments after his arrival. His accomplices, aged 27 and 28, were under police guard in a Pretoria hospital.

"Preliminary investigations revealed that Pienaar had just withdrawn money from an ATM when he was attacked," he said.

Mavimbela said Pienaar's wallet, a shotgun and ammunition were taken from the suspects.
