Ruling tension

LEADERSHIP tussles are inherently combustible processes that - if not handled well - can split an organisation right down the middle, threatening its survival.

LEADERSHIP tussles are inherently combustible processes that - if not handled well - can split an organisation right down the middle, threatening its survival.

A case in point was the ANC succession battle that climaxed in a split and resulted in the subsequent birth of the Congress of the People.

Similar rumblings of discontent have generated much mudslinging in recent months within the IFP, with its leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi warning at the weekend that internal divisions were posing its biggest challenge to the party since its formation 35 years ago.

It is not immediately clear how the party hopes to resolve tensions over a succession plan without a willingness to encourage internal dialogue. Tough times seemingly lie ahead, for the party is damned if it fudges the succession issue - and also damned if it pretends future leadership is not an issue at all.
