"Police are monitoring the scene (at the Edgewood campus). At the moment no disruptions have been made by the students," director Phindile Radebe said yesterday.
Student representative council president Thanduxolo Sabelo said students would continue to protest until the university met their demands.
Sabelo said about 200 students were excluded from studying because they could not afford to pay their fees.
"We also have a problem with housing. The university refuses to lease a building to accommodate students. There are about 200 students without accommodation."
He said food at the university was not up to standard and prices were high.
"We will be protesting for the whole week. Today (Monday) it's the Edgewood campus, on Tuesday it will be the Howard campus."
Sabelo said tomorrow students from the Westville campus would protest and on Thursday students from the Pietermaritzburg campus would take to the streets.
"If management refuses to listen to us on Friday there will be a mass strike in which students from all five campuses will protest."
In March students from the Durban University of Technology protested against poor accommodation and high food prices.
When students went on the rampage the police fired rubber bullets, and university management closed the institution. A task team was appointed by Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande to address problems facing the institution.
