IN A bid to produce quality scriptwriters, The Writing Studio will be hosting a workshop. It takes place on April 17 and 18 at Screen Africa, Sasani Studios, Highlands North, Johannesburg.
Aspiring screenwriters who have vivid imaginations and whose ideas are larger than life will benefit from the workshop.
With District 9, Invictus, Skin, White Lion and Jolocal Stories to its credit, the local film industry is booming. About seven South African films will be released this year, including the adaptation of Spud.
Budding screenwriters can sharpen their storytelling skills and develop their craft through the workshops. The workshop trainer is playwright, movie journalist and education, training and development practitioner Daniel Dercksen.
Dercksen says the workshops will allow young screenwriters to understand the principles of writing for a visual medium and what exactly it takes to be a screenwriter in South Africa.
He says the workshops are ideal for anyone with an idea for a story.
"If there is something or someone you want to write about, this is your opportunity to turn thoughts into words. Ideas are transformed into concepts that will be reworked into hard copy. The course turns theory into practice and ideas inside out."
Dercksen says the workshop explores the full dramatic or comedic potential of stories and empowers storytellers to write compelling stories that will reflect the uniqueness of their culture, history and experience.
"The workshop is also an introduction to the world of film-making and teaches writers how to read and interpret the fascinating language of film and how to evaluate and analyse film, television and theatre constructively.
It is ideal for novelists who would like to adapt their work into a visual medium as well as for those who would like to write a stage play."
Dercksen ran more than 500 writing workshops in South Africa over the past eight years. The cost of the workshop is R950. If you are a registered student, scholar or pensioner, the cost is R850.
