ANTANANARIVO - Madagascar's council of state got a new president yesterday when Max Ramilison, who is held by observers to be close to the government, was sworn in.

Ramilison replaced Noro Robinson Andriamarolahy, who was named in 2008 by Marc Ravalomanana, the Madagascan president ousted in March 2009 by Andry Rajoelina, who now heads the country.

"As a magistrate, I have taken the oath of office. I will be independent. I'm used to pressure," Ramilison said after the ceremony in the capital of the large Indian Ocean island nation.

Ramilison is said to be close to Norbert Ratsirahonana, the special councillor to Rajoelina's High Authority of Transition. - Sapa-AFP
