Mexican wave kicks off in SA

SIXTY days before the World Cup kickoff, one of the protagonists, Mexico, are making their presence felt in South Africa.

Bafana and Mexico lock horns on June 11 in the first official match, but Mexican company Hispano USA is already off the mark, positioning itself to provide all things Mexican through a project named "Una probadita de Mexico" (A Taste of Mexico).

This they will do by hosting in association with the Sandton Convention Centre a series of events in Johannesburg, Polokwane and Rustenburg - the venues of their team's first-round matches.

According to Hispano's Javier Ruiz Galindo, about 15000 Mexicans, who will arrive on these shores to cheer Javier Aguirre's team, will want for nothing in the way of their own food and music.

"The main thing for us, though, is to share with the rest of the world the Mexican culture, hence the name "A taste of Mexico".

This project was first launched at Germany 2006, with great success, Galindo said.

Asked if recent negative media reports about South Africa has dampened spirits back home, Mexican embassy secretary Oliver Contla Ortiz said the fans were coming, regardless.

"We receive enquiries about transportation, accommodation and security. We give the same advice of caution that we always give."
