It makes me wonder how he was elected president. Maybe the story that Malema bought votes is true.
Many people believe he enjoys more media attention than he deserves. If I'm not mistaken, they report on him more than on President Jacob Zuma. He must be a real news maker.
The pertinent question is: can the media really afford to ignore him? The answer: a resounding no. Malema is controversial and always says things the media cannot ignore. More importantly, he leads one of the most powerful political youth organisations on the continent.
How can a 28-year-old, who is still wet behind the ears, be so compelling in our politics? Simple - there is a leadership void and he is filling it. He is divisive, disrespectful and a bully. Ask ANC general secretary Gwede Mantashe.
The sad thing is that no one in the ANC leadership, including the president, seems to have the balls to stand up to Malema.
He persistently preaches the nationalisation of mines, saying it will happen in his lifetime. In Zimbabwe, where he received a hero's welcome, he said our country would soon nationalise mines though the ANC has repeatedly said nationalisation was not on the cards and was not part of its policy.
Malema has proven to be powerful in the ruling party and what he says goes. So who are we supposed to believe? He is powerful, irrespective of how the nation views him. We can't wish him away. He will continue to dominate the news - and the media should not be blamed for this.
