Written and directed by award-winning writer Aubrey Sekhabi, Kalushi: The Story of Solomon Mahlangu opens for a season at the State Theatre in Pretoria on April 20.
It has experienced actors such as Presley Chweneyagae, Hamilton Dhlamini, Zenzo Ngqobe and Keketso Semoko. Ndebele award -inning songbird Nothembi Mkhwebane has been added to give the play weight.
Mahlangu was charged with murder and terrorism in 1977 and was hanged in 1979. Born in 1956, he joined the ANC in September 1976 to be trained as an MK soldier in Angola and Mozambique.
He returned to South Africa on 11 June 1977. On June 13 1977 Mahlangu and his companions, Johannes Motloung and George Lucky Mahlangu were cornered by police in Goch Street, Johannesburg. In the ensuing gun battle two men were killed and two wounded.
Lucky Mahlangu managed to escape and Solomon Mahlangu and Motloung were arrested. Mahlangu was charged under the Terrorism Act. Motloung, who was brutally beaten, suffered brain damage and was unfit to stand trial.
