Four cops arrested after suspect dies

THE Independent Complaints Directorate yesterday moved swiftly to arrest four police officers in connection with the death of a 23-year-old man.

The officers, a warrant officer and three constables who are all based at the Roodepoort Police Station, allegedly beat Sibusiso Molefe to death at the station over the weekend.

Molefe's father Jerry Zulu this week told Sowetan that the trouble started after two officers arrived at their home in Tshepisong on the West Rand. He said his son was being sought in connection with an incident where a woman was shot.

Zulu said the officers threatened to kill his son should they find him.

The ICD took over the investigation after the family opened a case with them.

ICD national spokesperson Moses Dlamini said: "Molefe was arrested by the officers just after midnight on April 3 over an armed robbery.

"He was allegedly assaulted by the officers.

"He died at about 2.30am on the same day while on the way to hospital. The ICD is investigating a case of murder."

Zulu said he wanted the officers arrested and for the law to take its course.

Roodepoort police spokesperson Constable Vincent Mashiteng confirmed that a "suspect died and a murder case has been opened".

The officers' names have been withheld until their appearance in the Roodepoort magistrate's court today.
