THE reduction in the number of road fatalities over the Easter weekend demonstrates that South Africans are capable of behaving well on the roads.
Releasing the preliminary Easter traffic report in Pretoria yesterday, Road Traffic Management Corporation chief executive Collins Letsoalo commended road users and urged them to maintain their behaviour during the World Cup and beyond.
This year, 105 people were killed in 70 crashes between April 1 and April 5. The figure is 92 less than last year's number of road fatalities over the same period. The dead comprise 28 drivers, 48 passengers and 29 pedestrians.
More than 120000 vehicles were stopped and checked while 32692 notices were issued for a variety of driver and vehicle fitness offences. A total of 215 unroadworthy vehicles were taken off the roads.
Letsoalo said 654 motorists were arrested, 554 for drunk driving, 29 for reckless and negligent driving, 11 for excessive speed, five for overloading and 55 for various offences including false documentation.
The final Easter traffic report is expected to be released next Thursday.
