SOWETO-BORN DJ Terence has secured his place at the top of the food chain of local DJs. The three house compilations he has released have been successful nationwide.
With the release of his fourth compilation he hopes to add another chapter to his success story.
Born and bred in the dusty streets of Soweto, Terence knew from a young age that he wanted to be a musician. After attending SG Mafaza High School he studied sound engineering at the LMB Campus in Bramley.
After two years of studying he realised that he wouldn't achieve success via the book route. In 2006 he took the plunge and released his first compilation through Soul Candi Records. Soul Candi Sessions 3 was a collaborative effort between him, Roger Goode and the production duo Kentfonik. The compilation sold out in stores, quickly reaching double platinum status.
Riding high on the success of the Soul Candi Session 3 compilation, Terence released a solo project, The Music Box 1, in 2007, which reflected his eclectic taste.
"I listen to all types of music, but I especially enjoy listening to soul. I tried to create a compilation that was soulful, not just the fast dance style that people expect from house."
He continued in this vein with the subsequent release of second and third versions of The Music Box.
The Music Box 2 achieved a Metro FM award. He says: "I love music and sharing it with others, not because I want to win awards. Nevertheless, it was good to know that what I do is appreciated."
Emboldened by this victory, he produced a lounge compilation, The Music Box 3. "People like to go out to restaurants as well as clubs," he says. "The lounge disc is for them."
Already known as the "president of the dancefloors", he was surprised by the demand for lounge music.
"I am still taken aback by how successful it was."
The Music Box 4 was released in March and includes cool house, club anthems and breakbeats.
Terence tries out several brands of energy bar for Sowetan. The first contender is the Cadbury Snacker. "It's very crunchy and not too sweet. I like the fact that it's not drenched in chocolate. It has just enough chocolate to complement the muesli."
Next, he tries the Jungle Energy Bar. "This isn't crunchy, which is what I prefer. It is very soft and has too much chocolate." Next, he tries the Beacon All-In-One Bar. "I'm not a big fan of coconut, so this is not for me. It also has a lot of chocolate and toffee. The toffee makes it too sweet. You will need to see a dentist after eating it."
Last, he tries the Bokomo ProNutro Sport Bar. "I like the white chocolate. All the others had dark chocolate. It's a lot harder than the others and it doesn't have a lot of muesli in it.
