Milestone for regional league

SAFA and South African Breweries will celebrate the 10th anniversary of the successful SAB Regional League in style with the 2009-10 national championships in Durban next week.

SAFA and South African Breweries will celebrate the 10th anniversary of the successful SAB Regional League in style with the 2009-10 national championships in Durban next week.

Safa competitions director Balebetse Monnakgotla said all nine provincial teams would feature in the revamped tournament in Durban from April 17 to 23. They would be joined by a 10th team from University Sports South Africa.

For the first time in the history of this highly successful league, only Under-21 players will be allowed to feature in the national championships. Safa did this to fast-track development, forcing all the participating clubs to recruit more junior players to ultimately benefit Bafana Bafana. At the regional level of this event, each club must field a minimum of five players under 21.

"We play in 52 regions, meaning we have 52 winners. Every province is required to determine the two teams promoted to the Vodacom League in all the nine provinces," said Monnakgotla, adding that SAB will also honour successful products of the league.

Graduates of the SAB Regional League include Ayanda Dlamini of AmaZulu, who scored 10 goals in the Premiership in his first season in the professional ranks.
