BAFANA Bafana goalkeeper Emile Baron's dream of playing for his country at the 2010 Fifa World Cup is over since he is due to undergo surgery to his shoulder.

The injury will keep Baron out of action until July. Baron is the second senior Bafana player to miss the historic World Cup due to injury.

Benson Mhlongo has been out of action since October after suffering a career-threatening knee injury in Orlando Pirates' Absa Premiership match against AmaZulu.

The Bucs strongman suffered extensive damage to his anterior cruciate ligament and though he is expected to recover by next month, a source close to the player said he had decided to allow the injury to heal properly.

Baron was one of the tried and tested players coach Carlos Alberto Parreira wanted to include in the World Cup squad. He played a pivotal role in helping SuperSport United win their third successive Premiership title this season.

The talented short-stopper suffered the injury while on tour to Brazil with Bafana last month. He returned home immediately for treatment.

Baron, who is reportedly devastated by the setback, has been replaced by Maritzburg United's Shu-Aib Walters. Apart from Itumeleng Khune, the other keepers working hard to convince Parreira to be considered for the final squad include Moeneeb Josephs, Brian Baloyi, Darren Keet, Tshepo Motsoeneng and Rowen Fernandez.
