SYDNEY - Australia will pay Tiger Woods top dollar to return to Melbourne to play in this year's Australian Masters, officials said yesterday.

Woods received an appearance fee of almost $3million (R21,7million) to play the Masters in November. It was the last tournament he took part in before a sex scandal forced him to quit the greens.

The world No 1 is making a comeback at this week's US Masters in Augusta, Georgia.

James Merlino, the Victoria state sports minister, said Melbourne would welcome Woods back with open arms. - Sapa-DPA
