Three held for R450 000 worth of dagga

THREE people were arrested for being in possession of 450kg of dagga early yesterday morning, Eastern Cape police said.

THREE people were arrested for being in possession of 450kg of dagga early yesterday morning, Eastern Cape police said.

Superintendent Mzukisi Fatyela said two men and a woman, aged 19, 29 and 59, were arrested at a roadblock in the Bityi area of Mthatha.

All three are from Port Elizabeth and were driving in that direction when the police stopped them.

The dagga was found in nine bags, each weighing 50kg. Fatyela said the estimated street value of the dagga was R450 000.

The three were expected to appear in the Bityi periodical court late yesterday.

lMeanwhile, a policeman was shot and wounded during a shoot-out with a suspect in Mthatha, Eastern Cape police said on Monday.

Superintendent Mzukisi Fatyela said the officer was seriously wounded while chasing a 22-year-old man who suddenly opened fire on him on Sunday night.

The officer was recovering in hospital.

The man was held and charged with attempted murder and illegal possession of a firearm.

Six other people were arrested in connection with illegal possession of firearms in separate incidents in Mthatha on Sunday night. A total of seven firearms were confiscated.

lAt least 51 motorists were also arrested for drunk driving in Mthatha on Sunday.

Fatyela said 210 summonses were issued to motorists and 11 notices for unroadworthy vehicles.

He said the arrests were made during general crime prevention operations. The arrested people were expected to appear in the Mthatha magistrate's court yesterday. - Sapa
