Boy (17) loses appeal against rape conviction

A 17-YEAR-OLD youth boy's appeal against his rape conviction and 12-year imprisonment was dismissed yesterday by the Pietermaritzburg high court.

A 17-YEAR-OLD youth boy's appeal against his rape conviction and 12-year imprisonment was dismissed yesterday by the Pietermaritzburg high court.

Although the boy did not rape the 14-year-old girl, he had helped his accomplice in the perpetration of the crime. His co-accused Wiseman Mkhize, 25, was jailed for life for the rape of the schoolgirl in the sugar cane fields of Wartburg, KwaZulu-Natal, in October 2008.

Their victim had testified in court that Mkhize and the teenager picked her up near the sugar cane fields.

When she ran away, the teenager ran after her and caught her and she was later raped by Mkhize.

After raping her on a patch of grass, Mkhize and the teenager fled in a car.

The teenager had told the court that she knew both her attackers. - Sapa
