BAFANA Bafana technical sponsor Adidas has embarked on a campaign to recruit 384 youngsters to serve as flag-bearers at the 2010 Fifa World Cup.

BAFANA Bafana technical sponsor Adidas has embarked on a campaign to recruit 384 youngsters to serve as flag-bearers at the 2010 Fifa World Cup.

Zobuzwe Ngobese, the company's public relations manager for South Africa, said they were targeting youngsters between the ages of 12 and 16 years.

"The majority of the youths will be sourced through a local retail competition, which started on April 1 and will run until May 16," Ngobese said.

"In order to qualify, the youngsters will need to motivate in less than 100 words why they should be chosen as flag-bearers during the tournament," Ngobese said

"The winners will carry the yellow Fifa Fair Play flag onto the field at the World Cup games. There will be a total of six children in each of the 64 matches, totalling 384 flag bearers.

"Over 300 youths will come from all regions of South Africa and the rest will be selected through worldwide Adidas subsidiaries.

"What's exciting about this year's event is that South Africa's youth have a great chance of walking out onto the same field as heroes such as Steven Pienaar, Lionel Messi, Kaká, Steven Gerrard, David Villa, Michael Ballack and many more.

"Adidas is also giving away tickets for some of the best World Cup matches, including the opening game, the quarterfinals, the semifinals and the final.

"The public can enter by visiting www.adidas.com/za and clicking on the flag-bearers or ticketing competition blocks.
