WHEN you hear that someone is unfit for a position even before he or she takes office, your doubts first go to those casting aspersions, not the subject's own integrity.

WHEN you hear that someone is unfit for a position even before he or she takes office, your doubts first go to those casting aspersions, not the subject's own integrity.

And so it was with National Director of Public Prosecutions Menzi Simelane. We gave him the benefit of the doubt even when he did not come out of the Ginwala Commission smelling of roses. When his CV was intercepted, riddled with spelling mistakes, we continued to suspect sinister motives.

Then he suspended a batch of decorated senior prosecutors over some silly decision like the Jub Jub matter.

Now we learn that three of the original 14 senior prosecutors who were set to move to lower courts will return to their offices today.

Cool, thanks to hindsight.
