JAVELIN star Robert Oosthuizen has been ruled out of any further competition this year after undergoing surgery to a groin muscle injury sustained during the Yellow Pages SA Senior Track and Field Championships in Durban two weeks ago.

Oosthuizen, who posted Commonwealth qualifying efforts of 82,96m in Port Elizabeth on February 19 and in Potchefstroom on March 4, had hoped to represent South Africa at the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, India, in October.

Due for an operation to heal a bone fragment that tore from his body when the groin muscle injury occurred, doctors have advised Oosthuizen to give the groin six months of rest before resuming light training.

Thirteen athletes have posted Commonwealth-qualifying performances this season. The final qualifying event of the season for seniors - the sixth leg of the Yellow Pages Series - takes place at the Germiston Stadium tonight.

LJ van Zyl (400m hurdles), Cornel Fredericks (400m hurdles), Ruben Ramolefi (3000m steeplechase), Hardus Pienaar (javelin), Tumelo Thagane (triple jump), Tshamano Setone (5000m), Elroy Galant (5000m), Estie Wittstock (400m), Elizna Naude (discus), Sunette Viljoen (javelin), Justine Robbeson (javelin), Tebogo Masehla (3000m steeplechase) and Myrette Filmalter (3000m steeplechase) have produced Commonwealth-qualifying efforts.

Khotso Mokoena is eligible for selection, based on having achieved a silver medal for SA in the long jump at the IAAF World Indoor Championships held in Qatar last month.
