AFRO-POP group Malaika have fulfilled their role as campaigners against tuberculosis by releasing a single aimed at teaching the nation about the pandemic.
The group were designated TB ambassadors by the health department last year. They released their TB-awareness song last Wednesday, which was World TB Day.
The Destiny group officially performed the song at The Blues Room at the Village Walk in Sandton, Malaika's first performance in the motherland since returning from a three-city tour of the US.
A typical Malaika tune, it will be packaged in an album by the health department and will be distributed to the public for free. It is a groovy song and during the group's performance in Sandton this writer got lost in its rhythm but to those who like singing along the message will resonate.
So touching was the tune that global TB ambassador Gerry Elsdon walked up to the stage to congratulate the group for a job well done.
"It's a beautiful tune, isn't it?" an emotional Elsdon remarked, still clapping her hands as she walked past a table where the scribes were seated. Those who attended the TB awareness concert at the Sam Ntuli Stadium in Thokoza would also have heard the song by now.
Jabu Ndaba, the group's former third member and to whom the song is dedicated, died of the disease last year .
The song is a tribute to his contribution to the music industry, according to the group members Bongani Nchang and Tshidi Mholo, who sported a new hairstyle at the Sandton gig.

According to Sony Music marketing specialist Lekunutu Seboko the group will perform the tune at every performance to drive the TB-awareness message home.
"(The song) will be given to national and community radio stations, including campus stations. Interviews are lined up to spread the message."
Speaking about the US tour, Seboko said it had been successful and that the group had been invited to return in September to perform in even more US cities.
"All the venues Malaika performed at were sold out and the crowds amazingly sang along to almost every song. In September they will return to Dallas, Texas, Detroit and New York, but will also visit Washington DC, California and Chicago."
The group is currently working on an album, due to be released in November.
