WHILE many South Africans spent Easter Monday eating chocolate eggs, the farming town of Ventersdorp spent it paying tribute to Afrikaner Weerstandsbeweging leader Eugène Terre'Blanche.

WHILE many South Africans spent Easter Monday eating chocolate eggs, the farming town of Ventersdorp spent it paying tribute to Afrikaner Weerstandsbeweging leader Eugène Terre'Blanche.

Angry residents and right-wing Afrikaners from other provinces laid bouquets at the gate to Terre'Blanche's farm.

"He fought a lot for us and our language. And if we have more people like that in every community, things in South Africa would be much different," said Rean Olivier, an AWB member who travelled from Johannesburg to North West with his wife Isabella to pay their respects.

He said ANC Youth League president Julius Malema needed to be killed to "prevent" a war between blacks and whites in South Africa.

"I personally think Malema has to be taken out to level the playing field."

Terre'Blanche was killed on Saturday night on his farm near Ventersdorp, allegedly by two of his farm employees in a wage dispute. The killing came at a time of high racial tension said to be caused by the repeated singing by Malema of an ANC struggle song with the lyrics "shoot the Boer".

Some residents shared similar sentiments of revenge, but AWB member Pieter Steyn, speaking for the movement after Terre'Blanche's murder, retracted the party's previous threats to kill, according to the SABC. - Sapa
