grans may miss US trip

LACK of funds could end a dream trip to the US for 20 football-playing grannies from Limpopo's Vakhegula team, who were invited to participate in the annual Veterans Cup in Massachusetts in July.

LACK of funds could end a dream trip to the US for 20 football-playing grannies from Limpopo's Vakhegula team, who were invited to participate in the annual Veterans Cup in Massachusetts in July.

The organisers will not cover the travel costs for all 35 grannies but will pay for 26 people. That number will include 15 grannies and 11 officials, which means that the other 20 will have to pay out of their own pockets to realise their dream of visiting the US. The tournament will be played from July 13 to 18.

A concerned Beka Ntsanwisi, Vakhegula's founder and coordinator, said: "Our wish is that all the 35 grannies should be part of the trip to the US because since it was announced that they would go overseas they were all excited since they have never had a chance to go out of the country before.

"They pleaded with me to do something to ensure that the trip is successful. My belief is that the trip will leave a legacy even for the next generations.

"The organisers said they would pay R536000 for 26 people, which means that we need to generate R412300 for the other 20 players, something that will be difficult for us.

"Each granny needs R20615 for the trip, hence we are calling on both the government and private sector for backing. We also appreciate the support we received from Norman Tswale of Maeteko Funerals, who will help us for our trip to Esselen Park on Saturday."

Ntsanwisi, a presenter at Munghana Lonene FM, said Vakhegula would play a friendly against Metro Rail Eagles at Esselen Park on Saturday as part of their preparations.
